The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) four-concert autumn season runs from Thursday May 31 to Thursday June
21.
Conrad van Alphen and Victor Yampolsky will conduct two concerts each.
In the first concert, on Thursday May 31, the Italian pianist Antonio Pompa-Baldi will perform the Respighi Piano Concerto.
Other works on the programme are Rachmaninov’s Isle of the Dead and Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky and orchestrated by Ravel.
The concert will open with a curtain-raiser by the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble, highlighting its invitation to visit Germany next year.
The young musicians will be conducted by Faan Malan. Van Alphen’s second concert on Thursday June 7 features Russian violinist Nikita Boriso-Glebsky, who will perform the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto.
The concert begins with the overture to Beethoven’s opera, Fidelio, and concludes with his Symphony No.1, in E minor, by Sibelius. Victor Yampolsky, who will also present master classes to the 16 candidates accepted for the 4th Len van Zyl Conductors’Competition, will conduct the concerts on Thursday June 14 and Thursdy June 21.
The American pianist, Spencer Myer, will play the Grieg Piano Concerto, while Yampolsky and the CPO will perform Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture and the Symphony No.7 by Prokofiev.
The series concludes on Thursday June 21 with an appearance by Russian cellist Alexander Buzlov. He will play the Walton Cello Concerto, while Yampolsky and the CPO will present the overture to Wagner’s opera, Rienzi, and the Vaughan Williams Symphony No 5.
