■ Learn to grow with what you have at Soil for Life’s autumn open garden in Constantia on Saturday May 6, between 9am and 3pm. The theme, “Start where you are, use what you have and do what you can”, explores growing food in an earth-friendly way using rubbish and readily-available materials.Soil for Life’s team of experienced organic gardeners will be giving talks and practical demonstrations throughout the day on composting, feeding the soil, hidden “treasures” in the garden, water-wise gardening methods (such as hugel kultuur beds) and growing sprouts and micro-greens. Refreshments, plants and organic veggies will be on sale. Entry is R20 each and all profits go towards Soil for Life’s community Home Food Gardens programme, to help people in low-income areas create sustainable home food gardens.
