In the last of the Bulletin’s election series we take a look at Ward 63 (Wynberg, parts of Plumstead, Wetton, Fairways and Golf Links Estate) and Ward 71 (Tokai, Constantia Hills, Sweet Valley, Steenberg, Westlake, Dennendal, Dreyersdal, Frogmore Estate, and Kirstenhof).
The Ward 63 councillor for re-election is Monty Oliver and for Bulletin readers he is significant because a small portion of Plumstead fell under his reign.
Mr Oliver said the challenges in the area related to safety and security.
“Generally safety and security issues are on the increase but we hope meetings with SAPS and patrols by Law Enforcement will arrest this trend. Neighbourhood watches are doing their best by doing ongoing patrols,” he said.
Mr Oliver also upgraded Lympleigh Road park from his ward allocation over the past five years.
“The Plumstead facility has a circular track on the perimeter where mothers take toddlers for a walk in prams and do not have to dodge cars in nearby roads. Gym equipment was installed, the trees properly pruned and fencing repaired.”
Neighbourhood watches had also been given radios and training, Mr Oliver said.
Ward 71 is the last ward which the Bulletin will feature as part of the election series but at the time of going to press, DA councillor for re-election, Penny East, had not sent the details of what the ward’s challenges and improvements had been.
After the election, when new ward demarcation boundaries come into effect the ward will include Sweet Valley and Constantia Hills, which had previously been part of Ward 62. This means that residents in these areas who were happy with their previous ward councillor, Liz Brunette, will not find her face on the ballot paper and will have to put thought into which of the new candidates they would prefer.
