A Wynberg resident tipped off the Bulletin about solar lamps being installed in her area. Mayco member for area south, Eddie Andrews, says the roll-out of this project started in Wynberg on Monday February 6 and the City hopes to complete it by the end of March.
“This project is part of the City’s metro-wide efforts to improve the quality of public lighting for residents and to drive our energy conservation focus,” says Mr Andrews.
Mayco member for energy, Xanthea Limberg, says that with energy-saving light-emitting diode (LED) fittings the City can save about 40 percent on the energy consumption of the public lighting network.
“Energy efficiency is central to the City’s Energy 2040 goals which aim for the overall reduction of 37 percent in carbon emissions. Some 21 percent can be achieved through energy efficiency alone,” says Ms Limberg.
She adds they the City is saving residents money over the long-term by investing in a more sustainable way of performing their core functions. The City’s investment in energy efficiency has led to almost 45 000 street lights being fitted with LED lights thus far.
