The Hawks and SAPS raided a “secret dagga lab” in Constantia on Monday.
They found compressed dagga bricks as well as dagga-infused oils, capsules and cheese at a Fern Close home.
Computers, lab equipment and R180 000 were also seized as the suspected proceeds of crime, said Hawks spokesman, Captain Philani Nkwalase.
The Hawks’ Narcotics Enforcement Bureau and SAPS Crime Intelligence were acting on a tip-off. No arrests were made. Captain Nkwalase said the owner of the property – or the tenant if the property is being leased – would be traced and questioned.
Captain Nkwalase said DNA tests would be done.
Some of the dagga was in glass
containers, which would make it easier for fingerprints to be lifted if there were any, he said.
On Thursday March 28, the Wynberg police raided a dagga lab in a flat in Wynberg, (“Dagga Arrest”, Bulletin, April 3)
Wynberg SAPS spokesperson, Captain Ntombi Lindisapasi,
said they had been tipped off about the flat’s windows being tightly closed and screened
as well as the presence of
large ventilation pipes, presumably used to regulate the
temperature for the dagga plants.
Police later found an indoor plantation of 150 dagga
plants in the flat and arrested a 25-year-old man on a charge of drug dealing.
“Some of the dagga was in pot plants, in the furniture, it was everywhere,” Captain Lindisapasi said.
Police had also seized
cultivation equipment worth some R20 0000 including lights, fans and thermometers, along with sulphuric acid.
