Wynberg Boys’ High School has been closed after a fire gutted one of the academic blocks in the early hours of Thursday August 4.
Headmaster Jan de Waal says the fire was extinguished and fortunately there were no injuries. “The fire gutted four classrooms and an office and a further four classrooms below (suffered) extensive water damage. Until the damage has been assessed, we have asked learners to remain at home for Thursday and Friday,” he said.
“We wish to thank the fire department, SAPS and traffic services for their assistance. The cause of the fire is being investigated,” said Mr De Waal.
Fire and Rescue Services media liaison Theo Layne, said they arrived at the school, in Herschel Walk at 1am on Thursday August 4 and that one of the academic wings on the second and third floors had been ablaze. The fire severely damaged the building and furniture. “The probable cause of the fire is an electrical short circuit. No injuries were reported and the school was unoccupied at the time of the fire,” said Mr Layne.
