Produce from an organic food garden has been ending up on the plates of Constantia Primary School pupils since school started.
Most of the pupils are the children of Constantia
farmworkers.
Beetroot, spinach, celery, green peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, herbs and cabbage are just some of the healthy fare the kids can tuck into thanks to the garden.
The ground was prepared in November and some of the first veggies were ready when the school reopened in January.
The pupils have also been learning basic gardening skills .
A local supermarket, which is supporting the project, installed a 10 000 litre water tank and irrigation system. And 20 of the school’s parents have been taught gardening skills.
Principal Alastair Adams said the garden was a great teaching tool as well as a source of produce for both the pupils and eventually the wider community.
