Highs and lows of Ward 62

Lauren O’Connor-May

Homelessness and law enforcement are top of the list of challenges for Ward 62, says councillor Liz Brunette, who is standing for re-election for Constantia, Fernwood, Porter Estate and Plumstead and Wynberg, west of the railway line.

Ms Brunette, of the DA, and 15 other candidates will contest the August 3 local government elections for one of Cape Town’s most affluent wards. The other candidates are:

* Sorayia Logday of the Africa Muslim Party

* Jane Verster-Cohen of the ACDP

* Glen Geswindt of the ANC

* Mogamad Ganief Hendricks of Al Jama-Ah

* Mehmet Dag of the Al Shura Party

* Yagyah Adams of the Cape Muslim Congress

* Jack Miller of the Cape Party

* Carmen Kleinsmith of the Coloured Voice

* Anthea Cloete of COPE

* Ntombozuko Xokozela of the EFF

* Celeste Fisher of the Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa

* Heather Malcomess-Featherstone of the National Party South Africa

* Michelle Calitz of the National People’s Party

* Charmaine Biko of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania

* Andrew Fourie of the Freedom Front Plus

When asked what the challenges affecting Ward 62 were, Ms Brunette said there were not enough law enforcement officers, especially at the Wynberg public transport interchange.

The ward’s other challenges included the increase of homeless people, the maintenance of public open spaces, speeding and traffic congestion, especially in Wynberg.

“(It is) an old suburb with narrow streets in the Wynberg CBD, and connector roads to eight schools, Victoria Hospital and the M3 to the city,” Ms Brunette said.

Over the last five years, the ward allocation funding, for which Ms Brunette is directly responsible, has been used for:

* Traffic calming in Plumstead and Constantia.

* A rent-a-cop law enforcement Officer in Wynberg in 2013.

* Play equipment at five parks.

* Wynberg Park was upgraded with play equipment, bicycle racks and a pathway

* Maynardville Park was upgraded with outdoor gym equipment and bicycle racks

* Outdoor fitness equipment was install-ed at Alphen Common

* Ward allocations have also funded the river wardens since 2012

* Pathways in sections of Spaanschemat and Constantia Main roads.
