Maths whizz kids

Husnah Sonday (UCMAS Plumstead manager) and pupils Zia Whittern, Pragyaa Goel, Gagana Kanugonda and Kashwini Kanugonda.

Three pupils from a mathematics development programme in Plumstead won three first placings and one second placing in various categories in a national competition in Pretoria recently.

The three pupils who represented Cape Town were all aged five to 12. They belong to the Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS) club in Plumstead, which uses mathematical calculations on an age-old tool, the abacus, to develop natural creative mental powers at an early age when the brain functioning is at its peak.

The pupils won at the 12th annual UCMAS SA Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Competition. They competed against learners from all over South Africa and Lesotho on Saturday August 3 at the Alma School
for pupils with disabilities in Pretoria.

Competitors had to complete 200 sums in just eight minutes. UCMAS is an international programme with representation in over 80 countries.
