A well-known member of the Meadowridge community, Gordon Evans, has died after a long battle with cancer. He was
92.
Mr Evans served on the Bergvliet/Meadowridge Ratepayers’ Association for 17 years before retiring from the organisation at the end of 2017.
He served from 2011 to 2018 on the Ward 73 committee as the association’s representative.
He was also a member of the Mountain Club of South Africa.
He and his wife, Joan, were original residents of Meadowridge, moving into their home in Molinera Way in the 1950s.
Mr Evans was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Newton Drive, where he served for many years as an elder and carried out the maintenance work on the church and manse.
During the 1990s, Mr Evans served the Meadowridge scouts as the troop’s hiking adviser and badge examiner. He was also on the Friends of the Meadowridge Common committee.
Ms Evans said her husband had died on Tuesday afternoon August 25. “It was quite sudden, but he had a smile on his face as he left. He had been sick for a while now and he had a good life. He was a great mountaineer who was interested in many things. It’s still very hard for me to get used to, but it was a happy release.”
Mr Evans is survived by his wife, two daughters and five grandchildren.
The family will celebrate his life with a private memorial service.
