Police say the motive for the killing of a man who was shot in a Constantia mansion shortly before 1am on Friday last week remains a mystery.
They have not identified the victim, but they have not denied reports that it was Brian Wainstein, an alleged international steroid dealer.
Othermediaquoting unnamed sources suggested Mr Wainstein had been shot while in bed with his wife and small child – who were not injured – and that only three cellphones had been taken, but the Bulletin could not independently verify that.
The Hohenhort Avenue home is set among other sprawling estates in upper Constantia, many with their own security huts and CCTV cameras.
Neighbours who spoke to the Bulletin said they had heard nothing on the night of the killing and that the couple had not lived in the house long.
According to media reports, Mr Wainstein was on Interpol’s wanted list in February 2011 and had dual South African and Israeli citizenship. He also used the name Brian Benjamin.
The illegal steroid trade hit the headlines in the Western Cape in 2013. Mr Wainstein was arrested in January of that year after America requested his extradition to stand trial there for the illegal importation and marketing of drugs, including anabolic steroids. The process can apparently take several years, but it is not known whether he was still fighting extradition at the time of his death.
Wynberg police said the murder case had been handed over to provincial detectives. The Bulletin tried unsuccessfully to get hold of the investigating
officer.
Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut told the Bulletin on Tuesday that the police were still looking for a motive and no arrests had been made.
