Patricia Demas will be taking the helm of Bergvliet High in April next year.
Ms Demas, the school’s current deputy principal, will replace Stephen Price when he retires at the end of March.
She will be the first woman and the first person of colour to hold the position, according to a school statement.
After completing her higher diploma in education in 1988, Ms Demas took up her first teaching post at Spine Road High School in 1989. She moved to Plumstead High in 1997 and then to Bergvliet High ten years later.
She has been deputy principal for the past 12 years and is currently completing a two-year course at UCT on instructional leadership.
Ms Demas serves on the South African Principals Association (SAPA) executive.
The school statement said she was “well-versed in the Bergvliet High way of doing things” but would add her “innovative flair” to the position.
The school governing body was confident that Ms Demas would “fly the Bergvliet flag high”, the statement said.
“She is passionate about entrepreneurial education. School discipline is important to her, she is courageous and committed to making Bergvliet High better than ever.”
