Open mosque

The Open Mosque in Lester Road, Wynberg, hosted a celebratory programme and dinner on Monday March 20, to commemorate Human Rights Day, marked annually on March 21. Apart from honouring all those who died in the quest for a democratic, non-racial and corrupt-free South Africa, Dr Ali Mahate highlighted the foundational link between Islam and human rights in his keynote address. His presentation dealt with the creed’s perspective towards gender, children, non-Muslims, violence, democracy, justice, liberty and more. The Open Mosque is Qur’an-centric and they do not discriminate, both men and women have an equal voice and space in the mosque. They do not subscribe to any sects and are inter-cultural and independent.
