Paintings by South African masters Jacob Hendrik Pierneef and Maggie Laubser will go under the hammer at the Stephan Welz & Co auction at the Alphen Estate.
The paintings have been in private collections since they were first painted or acquired decades ago.
Stephan Welz Fine Arts specialist Kayleen Wrigley said the paintings are set to attract keen bidding, with the Pierneef piece, Near Greytown No.16, estimated to fetch between R800 000 and R1.2 million, and the Laubser, Portrait of a Girl with Headscarf Holding a Pumpkin, between R350 000 and R550 000.
Dr Rayda Becker, a senior specialist consultant, with almost 50 years of experience, says Laubser and Pierneef were both born in 1886 and are the forerunners of South African art. “They looked at South Africa in fundamentally different ways. Laubser was concerned about people, animals and occupied spaces whereas Pierneef focused on landscapes in which people rarely feature,” says Dr Becker.
Visitors to the Alphen Estate can also view paintings by Peter Clarke, Gerard Sekoto and five Clement Seneque works, which have been held by generations of his family since the early part of last century.
The works on auction are among more than 1 200 lots including furniture, jewellery and photo-
graphy.
Lots can be viewed between 10am and 4pm on Friday February 17 and 10am to 5pm on February 18 and 19.The auction takes place on February 21 and 22 at The Great Cellar, Alphen Estate, Alphen Drive, Constantia.
