Oscars Arc Woof Project, which helps dogs from shelters find good homes, held a pop-up adoption drive at Constantia Village at the weekend, and it plans to return for the next weekend or two.
Project leader Chanel Fourie said 1 520 dogs were re-homed over the past nine weeks.
The converted container is often seen at various venues around Cape Town and is the idea of Oscars Arc’s Joanne Lefson.
This registered charitable trust was founded in 2017 and is named in honour of her adopted dog
and best friend, Oscar, who travelled around the world visiting
45 countries to promote dog adoption.
Highlights of the 2009 World Woof Tour included Oscar
walking the Great Wall of China, climbing Machu Picchu, sailing the Amazon, posing before Red Square, hang-gliding over Rio and tying the knot in Las Vegas.
Oscar’s travels made him the international ambassador for homeless dogs, raising awareness of their plight.
Ms Fourie said the idea behind
the pop-up adoption centres is to create awareness that not all dogs are damaged and can go out in public. She said with the exception of puppies under six months of age, all dogs are vaccinated and sterilised.
“We always say, no matter what dog you are looking for, we will find it for you. However we
need funding to do this,” said Ms Fourie.
One of the people who visited the container on Sunday is Luke Marais of Plumstead.
He spent many hours getting to know each dog before eventually deciding on Bananarama.
“Loyalty was the most important thing I was looking for. Someone to stay by my side,” he said.
Oscars Arc Woof Project will
be at Constantia Village on
Saturday and Sunday March 23 and 24, from 9am to 6pm.
