Dr Shirley Zinn was guest speaker at Bergvliet High School’s prize-giving evening on Wednesday February 14. Dr Zinn, who
was born in Lavender Hill, attended Square Hill Primary and South Peninsula High, where she matriculated in 1979. She attended the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and was the first in her family to get a university degree. She taught English
for four years,while completing her honours degree, after which, she became a lecturer at the University of the Western Cape. She
completed both her masters and her doctorate at Harvard. Dr Zinn has served as chairperson of the Institute of Bankers and
as president of the Institute of People Management. She is the non-executive director of Sygnia Asset Management, adjunct
professor at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and president of the Harvard University Alumni Association of South Africa. She
runs a consulting firm, is the author of Swimming Upstream and was awarded the Top Woman in Business and Government and
Top Executive in Corporate South Africa by Topco Media in 2008. She is seen here with Grade 11 pupils Nyasha Gara and Meldah
