An intensive two-week programme, which included robotics and coding, was held for South Peninsula High School Grade 8 and 9 pupils, using the MiiA robot designed by Systems Engineers Tyrone van Balla and Ridhaa Benefeld. Tyrone, an ex-pupil of South Peninsula High, explained that the programme allowed pupils to grapple with the assembly and electronics of the robot. Pupils were then allowed to use their smartphones to operate the robot. The school has been identified by the Western Cape Education Department as a node for the implementation of a new coding curriculum at high schools but has already had workshops organised by RD9 Solutions for the past two years to expose pupils to the Fourth Industrial Revolution skill setting development programme.
