A standing ovation and applause greeted Lloyd Whitfield as Dannie Kagan presented him with a Paul Harris Fellowship Recognition, his fifth.
Peddlars in Constantia overflowed with past and present district governors, presidents and guests on Saturday June 11 for the induction of Rondebosch resident Peter Haylett, who will be club president for year 2016/2017.
Mr Whitfield was one of three people to be awarded with what is deemed to be one of the highest awards in a Rotary Club.
Named after one of the founding members of this volunteer-based organisation 105 years ago, it recognises special people in whose name funds are donated to the Rotary Foundation.
Recipients are then presented with a special badge, a certificate and become members of the Paul Harris Fellowship.
Kelly Winckworth presented a Paul Harris Foundation certificate to Abalimi Bezekhaya food garden trainer, Dave Golding, for his work at the Siyazama Community Allotment Garden Association (SCAGA).
The project, with support from the Ackerman Foundation, provides training to young small-scale farmers.
Richard Rawson then presented a Paul Harris Foundation certificate to Ivan Gabriel, of Diep River, for his support of Devonshire Rovers Baseball Club in Grassy Park.
The project keeps young people in sport and out of crime.
The club needs lighting for its baseball pitch and clubhouse.
Helen Brown of Little Squirrels Educare Centre in Westlake Village was also acknowledged for starting this early learning centre in her home in 2000.
It has 62 children and employs six teachers and carers. Ms Brown contacted Rotary in 2014 and since then has worked with Constantia Rotarian Geoff van Klemperer.
Rotarian Dannie Kagan of Noordhoek has taken on the project of Mamasiza Crèche. Constantia Rotary Club donated R49 000 for an upgrade of this nursery school in Khayelitsha, and a new small initiative is Sisanda FunDaytion in Retreat. Rotary has given it 10 Edu Boxes, an aid for six to eight-year-old children.
All of this is made possible through Rotary Constantia’s two main fund-raisers, the annual Winefest held in October, with a silent and live auction, and the second-hand bookstall at the Community Chest at the Maynardville Festival. Some 20 000 books are collected and sorted over five months.
