Constantia Rotary Club held an awards ceremony last week to recognise the hard work and dedication of several southern suburbs Rotarians.
Ian Felps received a posthumous award for his dedication and hard work over 16 years and especially for continuing to sort books for the annual Community Chest Carnival at Maynardville despite having been diagnosed with cancer three years before.
Other community-service awards went to various recipients during the function, attended by about 50 people, in Westlake on Tuesday June 26.
District governor Lynette Stassen pinned the Paul Harris Fellowship award on Geoff Von Klemperer and Mark Gibbs for convening the annual wine festival fund-raiser held at Schoenstatt estate.
The Paul Harris Fellowship is awarded by Rotary International for exceptional service.
Richard Fasham received an award for 23 years continuous service in many portfolios, club administration and projects.
Samantha Boting, of Westerford High School Interact Club, received a service award in the schools club category.
Chadwin Petersen, president of Steenberg Rotaract, was recognised for recruiting 10 new members over the past year in the 18 to 30 year age group.
Rotarian Michael McBride, who took pictures at the event, was also recognised for services to Constantia Rotary, as was Christopher Geale, the club’s secretary.
Constantia and Wynberg Rotary clubs recently got together for the Rotary Family Health Days where free services are offered to a community in need.
On Monday June 11, Biffy Danckwerts and Geoff von Klemperer handed out toys to clinics and special care centres.
They took off with a car fully loaded with toys and started at De Heide Special Care Centre, in Claremont, for intellectually disabled children, then visited Sunrise Special Care Centre in Punts Estate and the Retreat, Grassy Park and Hout Bay hospitals.
The donation of toys came care of the Wynberg Rotaract Club, which runs Uncle Paul’s Christmas Party and collects toys for distribution.
