Rotary Adventures in to Citizenship and Service is an annual programme of the Rotary Club of Cape Town which partnered with the Rotary Club of Wynberg.
Under the chairmanship of Rotarian Steven Boers and programme co-ordinator Justin Schonegevel, this event is truly a successful Rotary event that South Africa can be proud of.
Adventures in to Citizenship and Services started by the Rotary Club of Cape Town more than 70 years ago as an idea to expose more youth to the possibilities of becoming leaders of the city in the future. The event has grown over the years and in 2017 52 pupils from Upington to East London attended the programme that taught them what is required to be a leader of a democracy.
“Leaders are inspirers and nothing inspires more than a person who is brave to follow their own dream,” said Mr Schonegevel
The event, a highlight in the Rotary 9350 calendar, has grown so much that there is demand for a second week in 2018. The Rotary Club of Kirstenbosh has shown interest in growing this event so more pupils can experience the programme, during which this year’s intake visited Parliament, the High Court, Civic Centre, the University of the Western Cape, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, the South African Navy and the Cape Town Science Centre.
During the seven days in Cape Town they also participated in social activities which included a barn dance, Art Jamming, a visit to Kirstenbosch Gardens, African drumming, ten pin bowling and talks by Suzanne Ackerman and Braam Malherbe.
The participants are also taught to give back to the community and they made 40 sleeping bags which were donated to The Haven Shelter in Cape Town.
The Rotary Club of Wynberg is part of the Rotary International organisation that consists of volunteers who network with businesses and the community.
