Rugby player murder case investigated

Mysterious circumstances surround the killing of a former professional rugby player in Sea Breeze Road in Kirstenhof.

The body of Russel van Rooyen, of Muizenberg, was found at 3am on Friday March 3.

It appears that he had been jogging in the area.

Kirstenhof police arrested two men, aged in their 30s, in connection with the incident.

They appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court and were released on R1 000 bail each. The next court appearance will be Thursday May 4.

Sergeant Deidre Solomon said circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation and cannot be divulged.

Mr Van Rooyen matriculated in 2000 from Parow High School. He was a top athlete and rugby player who played for Currie Cup teams and formed part of the Springboks under-21 squad that played in Santiago, Chile.
