The Salvation Army will once again host Cape Town’s interdenominational Easter sunrise service at Rhodes Memorial, continuing a tradition that began in the 1940s.
The service, which is attended by up to a thousand people, will start at 6.20am on Sunday March 27 on the steps of Rhodes Memorial in Rondebosch.
As the sun crests over the Hottentots Holland mountains, they will join in song with Salvation Army bands from all over the peninsula to greet Easter morning in a 74-year old tradition – the first sunrise service was held in 1942.
No parking will be allowed at the Rhodes Memorial itself. Instead, parking is at the southern entrance parking areas (Exit 7 off theM3) of UCT’s upper campus.
Shuttles will run from 5am to Rhodes Memorial and back to the university. There is no charge for the shuttle service, and no booking is required. The shuttles will return to the campus after the service.
All denominations are invited to attend the service.
People are advised to dress up warmly and take blankets and cushions to sit on. Many also take flasks of coffee and hot cross buns with them.
