About 100 scarves were distributed at Maynardville Park in Wynberg on Tuesday July 9.
This was part of the sixth annual Secret Scarf Mission known as the #SSS where scarves are distributed to those in need during the month of July. This is to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s birthday on July 18 and to help keep people warm during the winter.
The scarves are tied to trees and poles at various venues across the country where people passing by can take them.
The venues where the scarves were distributed in the Western Cape this year were in Wynberg, Franschhoek and Lanquedoc.
On each of the scarves, a note was attached reading: “I am not lost, if you are cold and need me, please take me”
A guard at the park, Lusapho Hendrick from Luzuko, said he was excited to get one of the scarves. He said that it would come in handy on nights where he had to work his night shift.
Thousands of scarves are knitted across the country through the mission that is organised by 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day. If people want to be a part of the mission and knit scarves for the following
year, they can contact their local ambassador by visiting the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day website at www.67blankets.co.za
