In an effort to address the ongoing drug issue, the Wynberg Improvement District (WID) has initiated a sniffer dog trial in the Wynberg CBD.
WID manager Athol Swanson says many of the crimes in the area are linked to the drug activities and so they have taken on sniffer dogs that are professionally trained and are led by their handlers.
Working with the Wynberg police 37 ‘stoppe’ of dagga and tik lollies concealed in vehicles were netted during the first two days of patrolling the transport interchange, subways, CBD Main Road to Ebor and Langley roads.
On another day the sniffer dogs with Wynberg police and Wynberg law enforcement officers conducted foot patrols through the CBD and while no drugs were detected, an informal trader was found with counterfeit goods.
This project, while focussing on the drug problem, increased the visible policing and patrolling of the area and restricted the illegal trading and drug dealing where there was a noted absence of these during the patrols.
