Stop Hunger Now SA exceeded its goal of packing 21 000 meals at Blue Route Mall on Human Rights Day, Tuesday March 21, and completed 23 500, thanks to the help from volunteers. The packed meals will be distributed to schools in the Western Cape. The Diep River-based NPO works towards eradicating hunger, especially among pre-school children. The organisation is volunteer-driven and feeds over 50 000 children around the country with the support of active and passionate people who come to events such as the one at Blue Route. Stop Hunger Now also ensures that their programme encourages development and not dependency. Each school that they support must save a targeted amount of money that they would have spent on food to upgrade their facilities. They also work with partners that help improve the skills of teachers at these schools. Stop Hunger Now does regular meal-packaging events, if anyone is interested in volunteering or sponsoring meals, they can contact wcbranch@stophungernowsa.org, 021 705 6278, or 079 897 4787.
