Thanking moms

Mother’s Day is is a day for people to show their appreciation towards mothers and mother figures worldwide.

This past Sunday, May 14, women who are 65 years and over were treated to a high tea by Power of Women (POW) at the Steurhof community hall. Flowers, cakes, savouries, and gifts were on offer and the mother’s did not have to lift a finger as the tea was served to them by the POW team. And to top this off, each woman went home with a gift, a mug with the words “best mum in the world” on it, filled with chocolates, and a book.

POW spokeswoman Charmaine Maseko said many women in the community were affected by drugs and that they organised workshops to em-
power the women. These are held in the hall on Wednesday mornings from 11am to 2pm and have included making puppets from socks, baking koeksisters and knitting. The items are then distri-
buted in the community. They also offer help in the home, with, among others, haircuts and bathing.

Funds for the tea came from selling clothes donated by the community at Capricorn Park. Their next project is to raise money for a Father’s Day high tea.
