Pinelands Players will stage an energetic musical revue and quiz show, Game of Names, from tomorrow, Friday November 29, till Sunday December 8 at The Novalis Institute in Wynberg.
A cast of nine performers rehearses about 40 songs in various categories such as “female solo”, “male solo”, “duet”, “group” or “pop luck”. The names of all these songs are put into a box with guests spinning a game-show-style wheel to see what category will be performed and selecting the songs from a box.
“Since only 20 songs are used per night, the songs which are performed every night are purely up to chance, and the cast have to think on their feet. We added in some fun table quizzes and a game of bingo with fun prizes to keep things interesting with the audience,” said the theatre society’s chairwoman, Philippa van Ryneveld.
She said the concept for the show was created in 2017, when Kyla Thorburn and Barend van der Westhuizen worked with Pinelands Players to develop Game of Names.
“Something that has been part of a long tradition for Pinelands Players is supper theatre. A more relaxed setting with a meal, drinks and with great entertainment. We are bringing back Game of Names, and this time the theme is songs from movies and series,” said Ms Van Ryneveld.
Pinelands Players is a community theatre society with an award-winning history that spans over 70 years. Ms Van Ryneveld said they were not a professional production company and had a limited budget, but they did what they did for the love of theatre, relying on their shows to help them stay afloat and to put on more productions.
“Our aim is to create great theatre with people who are passionate about what they do, whether it be on stage or off. No one gets paid and any profits (if there are any) go towards putting on the next show or maintaining our clubhouse.”
Shows they have staged include, Legally Blonde – The Musical, The Full Monty, Shout!, The Mod Musical, and Hairspray along with smaller productions, concerts and gigs based at their clubhouse in Pinelands.
Tickets for Games of Names are R350 including a meal or R200 for the show only. Tickets are available on Quicket. For more information, contact Ms Van Ryneveld at philippa.vanryneveld@gmail.com
