The Thursday Club recently welcomed author Barbara Mutch as she launched her second book, The Girl from Simon’s Bay, at The Pavilion, in the gardens of Kelvin Grove in Newlands.
Born in Port Elizabeth, Barbara lives in Surrey with her husband and two sons and spends time whenever possible at their home in Simon’s Town, the setting of the book in the 1920s and 1930s.
The plot revolves around Louise Ahrendts, daughter of a shipbuilder, who nurtures the idea that through hard work she can step beyond a destiny of domestic service. The heartfelt drama is set against the trials of wartime and the approaching apartheid regime.
