Traffic lights flop in the village

Janet Cole, Constantia

Recently the traffic lights at Constantia Village (Doordrift Road/Spaanschemat River Road intersection) were upgraded, with green flashing arrows allowing right turns.

On the face of it, this seemed a good idea, but, in reality, it has been a flop.

The long delays have caused immense congestion in the area, with virtual gridlock for people trying to get into and out of the shopping mall at times.

I have lived in the area for 15 years and for the first time I see traffic backing up on Doordrift Road, right down over the bridge over the M3.

Perhaps the impact on traffic flow needs to be re-examined.

Felicity Purchase, mayoral committee member for transport, responds:

Thanks to the resident for bringing this to the City’s attention.

We have started investigating the matter.
