Dr Stefan Cramer, Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI)
You have reported at one stage about the threat of uranium mining in the Karoo to the livelihood and well-being of its residents (“New uranium mining alert,” Bulletin July 14, 2016).
The good news is that Australian mining company, Peninsula Energy, which was behind these plans, has just announced to withdraw from the Karoo.
Without their technical expertise and their Russian backing, we, Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI), believe that uranium mining is practically impossible in the Karoo.
After all, bigger players like the French Areva and BHP Billiton have all burnt monies on this issue in the Karoo and could not make it.
