The annual Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) open day was a great success. Held at the Newlands Fire Base on Saturday November 25, there was something for everyone, from snake displays and abseiling to fire-fighting demonstrations and fire truck rides. The highlight was a foam party which took place after a few glitches and gremlins and some help from the City’s fire officials.
Newlands station manager for the Volunteer Wildfire Services, Jon-Jon Emary, says the event is their annual fund-raiser but also a time to demonstrate the volunteers’0 skills and training, interaction ahead of fire season and to create awareness around veldfires.
