John Green, Western Cape regional representative, Wildlife & Environment Society (WESSA)
On Monday morning September 3, Eugene Moll, of Kirstenbosch, and Glenn Raper, of Steenberg Golf Estate, both reported that the annual mating season of the endangered western leopard toads started on Sunday.
Eugene reports that a few big mammas were rushing to the Kirstenhof wetlands to join their mates, and Glenn says that there is much bobbing up and down in the Steenberg dams.
Please be extra careful over the next week when driving on roads in the area, especially at dusk and early evening when it is damp, it is highly likely that the female toads will be crossing to or from mating in the wetlands under the Constantiaberg.
Be aware and assist the volunteer Toadnuts who are doing their best to assist the toads crossing.
We want to avoid the carnage of roadkills that we have experienced each year.
