Seventy children learned about the importance of brushing their teeth twice a day and eating healthy to keep their teeth in good shape during an oral hygiene talk in Westlake.
The presentation at the community’s Commando Hall last month was organised by Sibelius High School pupil Siseko Jokazi and UWC dentistry student Kino Basson.
“It surprises me to learn and read about dental neglect in vulnerable communities. That is why I am hoping to nurture more minds on essential basic dental hygiene,” Mr Basson said.
“I think the children now realise the rationale behind brushing their teeth twice a day for tooth and gum health as well as how diet can lead to cavity problems and eventually pain – as that was their main concern – toothaches.”
Siseko, a former member of the Junior City Council, said the children were particularly interested about the sugar content of sweets, lollipops, and the impact of these on their teeth.
The presentation came about after he met Mr Basson through a mutual friend.
Siseko has started a games club that meets every Friday afternoon in Westlake, and he now plans to expand it to include more community outreach work.
He is seeking donations of soap, menstrual pads, toothpaste toothbrushes, face cloths and deodorant to put in care packages for girls in Westlake Village in honour of Women’s Month.
