Nhlanhla Dube, Westlake
I write to set the record straight. The bridge repairs were never completed. The maintenance went almost halfway from Reddam Avenue. Up to Thursday evening, 6 June, it was still incomplete (“Westlake pedestrian bridge repaired,” Bulletin May 30).
• Pieter Greyling, general manager at the Westlake United Church Trust, responds:
The scope of work increased as we worked on the bridge. There was much more damage under the bridge than we initially thought. This took time and extra money. We also decided to replace more planks than we anticipated.
We thus had to purchase another 130 planks. At that time, our cash ran out and we had to raise more money. In the meanwhile, we made the bridge usable by consolidating the existing planks and filled gaps and repaired planks where we could.
Fortunately, friends of the trust came to our assistance. Constantia Rotary donated R5 000 and local business Cirtech donated R4000.
The planks were delivered on Tuesday June 4. Due to the rain, we have been unable to complete the work. On Monday June 10, we went out to install the rest of the planks, which were completed the next day.
The Westlake community have been generous in their praise and appreciation for the work we have already done.
