The Western Cape Blood Service will hold its “big bleed” this Saturday with the aim of collecting 1000 units of blood across 10 malls in a single day.
The service says blood stocks typically decline during winter and it is a struggle to maintain the required five-day blood stock levels.
“We are inviting our donors to please support us by bringing a friend when you come and donate, and, in doing so, inspire others to donate blood. We are hoping to welcome 200 or more new blood donors to our blood-donor family,” said WCBS spokeswoman Marike Carli.
The public can donate blood from 9am to 4pm at the 10 participating malls: Blue Route Mall in Tokai, Kenilworth Centre, Bayside Mall in Table View, N1 City Mall in Goodwood, Tyger Valley Shopping Centre in Bellville, Capegate Shopping Centre in Brackenfell, Liberty Promenade Shopping Centre in Mitchell’s Plain, Somerset Mall in Somerset West, Whale Coast Mall in Hermanus and Eden Meander Lifestyle Centre in George.
During winter, the service pays tribute to blood donors by giving each of those who donate blood a pair of “WCBS hero-inspired” socks.
“Heroes don’t get cold feet: they step up and save lives. Join us this Saturday and help support the many patients who need blood during this crucial period,” Ms Carli said.
