A howling south-easter did not dampen spirits at this year’s annual Birdathon at False Bay Nature Reserve. In 2015, the reserve was declared a Ramsar Site, which is a wetland of international importance. Held on Saturday October 20, the birdathon was an opportunity for residents to discover a nature reserve right on their doorstep, letting them experience it in a fun way, while learning about its importance. It was organised by the Cape Town Environmental Education Trust (CTEET), in partnership with the City of Cape Town, Birdlife South Africa and the Cape Bird Club. Hundreds of children and families had a blast, enjoying a breezy 4km and 6km walk through the reserve from the picnic area. There was an environmental quiz, interactive activities with owls from the Eagle Encounters Raptor Rehabilitation Centre, snakes by the Cape Reptile Club and performances by the Jungle Theatre Company. Exhibitors included Two Oceans Aquarium, Save Our Seas Shark Centre, Cape Leopard Trust, and the SA National Biodiversity Institute. While having fun, children learnt about the value of indigenous plants, the biodiversity found within the reserve, and how to protect nature by recycling, making eco-bricks and not littering.
