The second annual Cape Town Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME) Summit, a gathering of small business owners, entrepreneurs and inspiring business people, is taking place on Tuesday June 27 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).
The event is being held on the same day when the United Nations celebrates its annual Micro,Small and Medium Sized Enterprises Day to raise awareness of the tremendous contributions made by the small business sector to the achievement of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. It is widely recognised that the SMME sector accounts for 90% of all businesses, creates between 60% and 70% of all jobs and approximately 50% of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Among others, the Cape Town SMME Summit aims to recognise the crucial role being played by the sector in terms of job creation, discuss the current electricity crisis and ways to operate during this crisis, unite SMMEs in an effort to foster a better working relationship with all tiers of government, discuss red tape reduction and greater access to government business, find commonality in terms of rebuilding the sector in this post-Covid-19 environment, find ways to maintain and create more jobs during these difficult times, discuss ways to market the sector during these difficult times, encourage women and youth to start businesses, encourage the sector to collaborate, share information and ideas, and encourage the sector to support one another.
Confirmed speakers include Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, the City of Cape Town’s Mayco member for economic growth James Vos, the MEC for Economic Opportunities Merrill Wenger, member of Parliament and economics expert Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, global business icon, mentor and motivational speaker Vusi Thembekwayo, CEO of Africa Community Media Sandy Naude, Heart FM’s Olwethu Nodada, and general manager for online channels at MTN Gareth Murphy.
Small business owners will have an opportunity to network and pose questions to the speakers during the breaks as well as visit the various exhibition stands.
The summit takes place at the CTICC Auditorium 1 on Tuesday June 27 – registration and networking is from 3pm to 4.55pm, with the summit starting at 5pm.
