The Cape of Good Hope Lions Club based in Plumstead, is celebrating its 60th anniversary on Saturday November 24 with a glitz-and-glamour ball in Grassy Park.
Its president, Charlotte Jubelin, says he club plans to present charter member Harry Myers, 98, of Mouille Point, with an award for his 60 years of service.
The club has served various poverty-stricken communities since 1958.
For many years the club was well known for its mielie stall at the Community Chest Carnivals at Maynardville Park in Wynberg.
The club’s projects have changed over the years. It holds community wellness days, provides soup and sleeping bags for the homeless, organises outings for seniors, distributes sani- tary towels at schools, holds Christmas parties for the needy, donates books to schools and more.
The club’s youngest member is Kyran Pieters, 18, from Retreat and its oldest active member is Yvonne Poyo, 74, of Fairways who recently attended the Lions international convention in Las Vegas with Ms Jubelin and Mr Myers.
“As the 60th president of Lions Club, Cape of Good Hope, I’m extremely honoured and proud to belong to an international organisation with our motto ‘we serve’. Our club consists of 27 ordinary men and women doing extraordinary things,” said Ms Ju-belin.
The ball will be held at Plantation Primary School, on the corner of Grace Street and Plantation Road, Grassy Park, on Saturday November 24, at 6.30pm. Entry is R170 and includes a three-course meal. Book with Charlotte at 082 334 7048, or email charlottejubelin23@gmail.com
