The under-12 soccer team at St Mary’s Primary School in Retreat have new soccer kit thanks to six Dutch students.
The students have been working with the children as part of a three-month early childhood development internship at the College of Cape Town.
The students said they would miss the hugs from the children during their time in the country.
Theo Brauns, a soccer coach and teacher at St Mary’s, thanked the students during the handover of the kit last Friday.
“Your initiative is in harmony with the African proverb: It takes a village to raise a child. Our children love being part of a team, and the soccer kit is one way to encourage this.”
His words were echoed by one of the children who shouted, “We can’t wait for our next game!”
