An awareness drive, warning the public about the dangers of wildfires, will be held at Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden next month.
The presentation is being organised by Parkscape and Professor Coert Geldenhuys will be one of the speakers.
He has lectured at Stellenbosch University and the University of
Pretoria on forest ecology and
will talk about the “realities
of the devastating wildfires on the Cape Peninsula: Tokai, Constantia, HoutBay and Newlands”.
Wildfires are common during the dry summer months, especially in areas with lots of fynbos.
Parkscape chairperson
Nicky Schmidt says the proliferation of alien vegetation adds fuel to the fynbos, driving up the risk of severe fires that could
burn from the Constatiaberg slopes all the way to the
Hout Bay and Newlands
areas.
The presentation at the Old Mutual Hall is on Thursday October 17, from 6pm to
8pm and it includes a wine-tasting.
