The 61st Berg River Canoe Marathon started last Wednesday at Val de Vie estate outside Paarl and finished in Velddrif on Saturday afternoon, covering a distance of 252km in four days.
Peninsula Canoe Club (PCC) which operates from the Zandvlei Sports Club (ZSC) in Lakeside, on the banks of Zandvlei, had 11 members in the race of various ages.
Six of the top 12 finishers were from Peninsula Canoe Club, this included two 21-year-old first timers, Uli Hart and Dan Jacobs, who were second and ninth overall.
Dyllan Farrell, 19, was 12th overall, making three of the top four under-23 men from PCC.
Evergreen, Western Cape Paddling legend, Graeme Solomon, who will turn 50 this year, finished his 23rd Berg in 5th place overall
Other notable achievements were:
- Christy Shrimpton, 20, finished her 1st Berg in 5th place in the women’s race, the second under-23 woman;
- Grand Master legend, Paul Lange, finishing his 30th consecutive Berg; and
- Paul Moxley finishing his Berg, after just having finished the Freedom Challenge mountain bike race from Pietermaritzburg to Wellington.
