Libraries opened for browsing again on Wednesday July 28 after several of South Africa’s lockdown regulations were relaxed as the country moved to an adjusted level 3 lockdown.
Meanwhile, black-and-yellow beanies have been steadily pouring into libraries across the city.
Plumstead has 86, Wynberg 609, Tokai 124, and Southfield 789. The beanies were knitted in recognition of Mandela Day on Sunday July 18. These will be donated to city clinics for distribution to babies who visit these facilities for their health check-ups.
The City says patrons and staff from libraries across Cape Town knitted 3 149 beanies and several other baby items.
The beanies are the same colour as LiBee, Cape Town’s library mascot.
“When we challenged our library staff, friends and family to join our beanie project and to knit bee beanies, we knew they’d buzz to the challenge,” said Zahid Badroodien, mayoral committee member for community services and health.
The project celebrates LiBee and the City libraries’ upcoming 1 000 Stories before School Reading Campaign, which starts in February next year.
It focuses on the joy, benefits and importance of reading to children from 26-weeks of pregnancy until they go to school when they can start learning to read for themselves.
People can drop off their beanies until Friday July 30. Plumstead is open from 9am to 1pm. Plumstead library manager Jean Pappas said their staff would continue working after 1pm doing a drop-off and collect system of books.
