Dance applications open

* The Baxter Dance Festival is celebrating 15 years of showcasing the best of dance in the Western Cape. Pictured are Ciara Baldwin and Nathan Bartman of CAN Creative, who were choreographers of commissioned work last year, performing in the dance piece, Sentient Being.

The annual Baxter Dance Festival is calling for applications from choreographers, independent dance-makers, dance studios, schools, companies and groups.

The closing date for applications is Friday May 31, at 5pm, and the festival will take place from Thursday September 26 to Saturday October 5.

The Main Programme will include works by established professional choreographers and companies and runs for the entire festival. The Off-Main Programme, on Saturday September 28, will showcase the work by up-and-coming choreographers, including student work, and the Fringe Programme, on Saturday October 5, will include work by youth groups, dance schools, school groups,
traditional dance groups and others.

The Baxter Dance Festival provides a platform for emerging and established dance companies and choreographers to present their work.

The Baxter Theatre Centre provides lighting, sound, technical assistance, publicity, box office facilities, printed programmes and pre-show rehearsal arrangements.

The selection panel will shortlist entrants who will be required to present a two-minute extract of the new choreography.

More than 500 choreographers have showcased their work at the festival, featuring close to 5000 dancers from more than 400 studios, dance schools, projects and professional companies from across the Western Cape, presenting an array of dance styles and genres including contemporary, classical, African, modern and Spanish.
