A police pursuit of four suspected crowbar gang members took a bizarre turn last week Monday when the suspects drove into Pollsmoor Prison.
The law enforcement officers pulled the vehicle over and during questioning found a replica firearm, a crowbar, knives and City of Cape Town marked overalls -hallmark tools of crowbar gangs, according to law enforcement spokesman Wayne Dyason.
The car had been reported stolen in Hout Bay.
The suspects were processed at Kirstenhof police station and were found to have about 35 cases pending against them for murder, attempted murder, theft, possession of illegal firearm and more.
One suspect was also wanted on a 2014 Khayelitsha case for theft of arms and ammunition.
* Security at Pollsmoor Prison has been beefed up after a prisoner was stabbed to death in a suspected gang fight in the Medium A remand detention facility on Thursday May 3 at about 9pm.
Another prisoner is reportedly fighting for his life after suffering critical injuries.
A case of murder and grievous bodily harm is being investigated by the Department of Correctional Services along with the Kirstenhof police.
* In the early hours of Saturday May 5, law enforcement officers arrested five suspects in the Muizenberg and Steenberg areas for possession of mandrax.
Mr Dyason said one of them tried to bribe the officers to
avoid prosecution and was promptly charged for that as well.
