Pupils from nine southern suburbs schools competed to see who could create the best sculpture out of recyclable waste at Blue Route Mall on Saturday.
The Sustainable Trendsetters Build-a-thon competition was held in honour of Earth Day, Saturday April 22. The annual competition challenges pupils to create a sculpture that represents something they are passionate about.
The pupils from Wynberg Boys’ Junior School, Muizenberg Primary School, Zwaanswyk Academy, Bay Primary School, Rustenberg Girls’ Junior, Sweet Valley Primary School, SACS, Steenberg Primary and Kirstenhof Primary were briefed to collect their own recyclables for their creations, which they had seven hours to complete.
The teams of six pupils and one teacher were able to swap out with others during the day to keep the momentum going.
Judges selected by the mall will judge the sculptures, which will be on display until Tuesday May 2 when the winners will be announced.
The winning school will be awarded a cash prize of R20 000 courtesy of a beverage company.
Mayoral committee member for urban waste management Grant Twigg said waste-to-art exhibitions were a very effective way to demonstrate that the things we threw away often had value. “It can even be turned into something really beautiful,” he said.
He added: “With business and government and our country’s youth all working together, there is real hope for a cleaner and healthier environment in future.”
