James Forsyth, Friends of Constantia Valley Greenbelts committee member
Brian Ratcliffe is the man we must thank for the unique network of paths we have in the Constantia Valley today.
Brian, or “Rat” as he often called himself, was a lover of wildlife and a passionate birder. He dedicated his life to the Constantia valley and thought there was no better place to walk his dog.
Brian began his dedication to the Constantia valley as a city councillor, and, in 1997, started the Friends of the Constantia Valley Greenbelts (FOCVG). He was a committee member of the Constantia Property Owners’ Association for many years (The CPOA was the forerunner to the Constantia Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association).
Clearing alien vegetation and constructing boardwalks do not come free, and Mr Ratcliffe’s skill for raising funds was legendary.
He had the foresight to start recycling in the valley, and this has become the backbone of the funds which the FOCVG now use for the conservation of the greenbelts.
Sadly, Brian passed away earlier this year and is sorely missed by family, friends, and City officials.
