Robert Winfield, Westlake
As a regular mountain biker, I am dismayed to report that above the Tokai plantation, two of the contour trails, Levels 4 and 5, are blocked to vehicular traffic.
The landslides in September brought tons of rock and earth down and this was deposited on the two trails. Now, almost four months later, no attempt has been made to clear these trails.
If there were to be a fire in the area no fire engine would be able to get through neither would any vehicle carrying beaters.
Surely this is a huge risk. It’s high time that Table Mountain National Park people realised this and cleared the trails forthwith.
Why has it not been recognised as a problem?
• Babalwa Dlangamandla, public relations officer for Table Mountain National Park, responds: Table Mountain National Park staff have recently completed the assessment of damage done to the Tokai upper Level 4 trail. This process took some time, as did the process of submission for maintenance funds through insurance. The submission process is now completed and a service provider will be appointed to conduct the required maintenance.
SANParks appreciates the support from the mountain bike community, and specifically TokaiMTB, who assisted with assessment and access on Level 5 in the upper Tokai precinct.
