Thank you for writing the article in the Constantia Bulletin about the Wynberg Station vagrants (“Wynberg residents fed up with vagrants,” Bulletin, April 20).
The area is absolutely unsafe, unclean and a nightmare for commuters and residents. The City is limited in its actions because the land is owned by Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa).
My suggestion to the City is to declare Prasa an absentee landlord and take control of the site and enforce the by-laws.
I have empathy for people finding themselves on the street, but this situation in Wynberg and elsewhere in Cape Town is not the way to address the situation.
Any national government-owned land is a target for vagrants and squatters, and the City of Cape Town should obtain a court decision to declare those departments absentee landlords.
This is the only way to clean up the streets and public spaces, and assist the people.
Please do a follow-up article on the matter, and invite the mayor and the premier on a site visit as well.
We can do better than this.
